Car Ride

I was riding in a car with friends to a go to a friends house for dinner and games when the driver asks me, “Do you speak your native language?” I was surprised by this question because I had known this person for a long time and they knew I was born in the United States. I responded with a smile, “Yes, I speak English.” I continued to smile and explained, “My Mother decided not to teach my siblings and I Spanish because she was hit for speaking Spanish in primary school. She did not want us to have that same experience.” After we arrived at our friends house the driver said to the person who was sitting in the back seat “I didn’t realize she was so sensitive about being Mexican.”
